Deep Tech talent and exportable opportunities for Made in Italy

Deep Tech in Switzerland

In the heart of Europe, Switzerland is emerging as one of the most advanced and dynamic hubs in the global Deep Tech landscape. With a unique combination of academic excellence, high density of AI talent, strong appeal for international capital, and sectoral diversification, the Alpine nation is positioning itself as a true global tech powerhouse.

Swiss Investments in Tech

  • 60% of venture capital investments in Switzerland are allocated to Deep Tech, compared to a global average of 34%.
  • Deep Tech funding has increased sixfold over the past decade, reaching USD 1.9 billion in 2024 and projected to hit USD 2.3 billion in 2025.
  • Switzerland ranks first in Europe for Deep Tech investment per capita and third globally.
  • ETH Zurich and EPFL are among the top five European institutions in terms of value generated by Deep Tech spin-offs.

AI and talent: a strategic asset

Switzerland boasts the highest density of AI talent in Europe, attracting tech giants such as Google, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, OpenAI, and Anthropic. This makes the country a privileged hub for the development of cutting-edge solutions in AI/ML, Climate Tech, Robotics, TechBio, and BioTech. Over 85% of Swiss Deep Tech VC funding comes from international investors, with a strong presence of U.S. capital in late-stage rounds. However, there is a growing need to strengthen domestic capital, particularly to support the scale-up of startups in advanced stages.

The Alpine Tech Cluster: what is the Europe’s super-cluster

Switzerland lies at the core of the Alpine Tech Cluster, which includes cities such as Basel, Zurich, Munich, and Milan. This super-cluster is increasingly seen as the “New Palo Alto” of Europe, capable of competing with major tech hubs like London, Paris, and Amsterdam.

Is it an opportunity for Italy?

In this context, the Italian Chamber of Commerce for Switzerland (CCIS) actively promotes Italian tech in Switzerland. The goal is to offer Italian startups an acceleration platform through connections with investors, corporates, and open innovation programs.

The Confederation, with its rich and internationalized ecosystem, can serve as a springboard for Italian startups to access global markets says Fabrizio Macrì, Secretary General of the CCIS.
